Margolis Video is Benji Margolis's VHS rental store, one of the last video stores in America. The store exists because VHS technology works without broadcasting signals, making it compatible with the National Quiet Zone's restrictions. Behind its nostalgic facade, the store doubles as Benji's conspiracy research headquarters, its walls covered in maps, string boards, and documented cryptid sightings. It also contains the research notes left behind by Benji's missing father, David Margolis.
Overview
Margolis Video occupies a storefront in downtown Nowhere, its faded signage and neon "OPEN" sign a relic of the 1980s. Inside, floor-to-ceiling shelves hold thousands of VHS tapes organized by genre, from horror classics to obscure documentaries about the paranormal. The store smells of aging plastic and magnetic tape, with a perpetually running CRT television playing whatever Benji finds appropriate for the mood.
The store was originally opened by David Margolis, Benji's father, who disappeared years ago while working at the Big Ear telescope. Benji inherited the business and has maintained it as both a tribute to his father and a cover for his real passion: investigating the supernatural phenomena that plague Nowhere.
"People think I'm crazy for running a video store in the 21st century. But in Nowhere, VHS is cutting-edge technology." Benji Margolis, Episode 1
Why VHS Still Works
The store's existence is uniquely logical within Nowhere's constraints. The National Quiet Zone prohibits broadcasting signals, which eliminates:
- Streaming services (no internet)
- Cable television (broadcasting interference)
- DVD/Blu-ray players with WiFi capabilities
- Any digital media requiring network connectivity
VHS players, being purely mechanical/analog devices that don't emit radio frequencies, are one of the few entertainment technologies that function within the Quiet Zone. This makes Margolis Video not just a novelty but a genuine necessity for Nowhere's residents.
The Research Headquarters
Behind the customer-facing storefront and in the back rooms, Benji has assembled an extensive conspiracy research operation:
- String Boards: Multiple corkboards connected by colored string, mapping relationships between cryptid sightings, disappearances, and supernatural events
- Maps: Detailed topographical maps of the area surrounding Nowhere, marked with sighting locations, energy readings, and danger zones
- Cryptid Sightings Log: A meticulously maintained database (on index cards) of every reported supernatural encounter in Nowhere's history
- VHS Evidence: A collection of tapes containing footage Benji considers evidence of supernatural activity, some dating back decades
- Police Scanner: Modified to pick up frequencies that normal scanners miss
David's Research Notes
Among the store's most valuable contents are the research notes left behind by David Margolis. Hidden in a compartment David built into the store's floor, these notes document:
- Anomalous frequencies detected by the Big Ear telescope
- Correlations between telescope readings and supernatural events
- Theories about dimensional rifts and their connection to the Quiet Zone
- Warnings about the Beaumont family and their secret activities
- Partial translations of signals David believed came from another dimension
The discovery of these notes in Episode 5 is a turning point for Benji, confirming that his father's disappearance is connected to the same supernatural forces the group is investigating.
Teen Gathering Place
Margolis Video serves as the primary gathering place for the younger characters in the show. Without internet, social media, or modern hangout spots, the store provides:
- A private space away from adult supervision
- Access to Benji's research when planning investigations
- Movie nights that double as research sessions (Benji selects films he believes contain encoded truths)
- A sense of normalcy in an abnormal town
Episode Appearances
Margolis Video appears in nearly every episode of Season 1, serving as the group's base of operations:
- Episode 1 - First appearance; established as Benji's store and the teens' hangout
- Episode 5 - David's hidden research notes are discovered
- Episode 8 - The store is used as a planning headquarters for the group's assault on the Beaumont cult
Trivia
- The store's inventory includes over 3,000 real VHS tapes, many sourced from actual video store closures.
- The string board in the back room was maintained by the prop department throughout production, with new connections added as the plot developed.
- Benji's store motto, "Be Kind, Rewind... and Watch Your Back," is a play on the classic video rental reminder.
- Several tapes visible on the shelves are fictional titles that reference other supernatural shows and films, serving as Easter eggs for genre fans.
- The set for Margolis Video was built inside a real former video rental store in rural Virginia that had closed in 2012.
